There is no such thing as a "peaceful" civilization. Civilization is *always* built on oppression, theft, genocide (whether human or non-human). Rule of law is always at the threat of having a gun pointed in your face. People need to quit thinking civilization is some kind of benign state that keeps a peaceful world.
I hate to bring up everybody's hated FBI snitch and transphobe but this film (despite the messenger) made by @franklinlopez covering Derrick Jensen's anti-civ thoughts, is still apt. Ignore the messenger and take in the message.
I say it again in all-caps in case it didn't sink in: THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A PEACEFUL CIVILIZATION
@ruemaleficent @franklinlopez indeed, civilization is inherently coercive, as is nature with regard to survival. I suggest that civilization is organic and inevitable. The challenge for humanity is to regulate civilization. What shall it be? Fascist? Democratic? At what scales?
@Qbitzerre Civilization isn't organic and it always ends. Every civilization in history has ended. The one we're in now is on its way down the road to ending. Previous civilizations ending only affected their local area, and nature was able to bounce back. Our current civilization is global and it's taking everything down with it.
As a species we lived for tens of thousands of years before civilization was invented, in harmony with our planet. We can do it again.
@ruemaleficent you are referring to the struggle for survival in the natural world. Are you suggesting that humans lived in a pure state of individualism without any form of social order? If not, what sophistry do you use to distinguish that from civilization?
@pkw sophistry is the practice of applying cushions and fabrics to couches. It's a portmanteau of sofa and upholstery.
@pkw Trash took itself out, don't bother with them.
"An argument that seems plausible, but is fallacious or misleading, especially one devised deliberately to be so"
The pro-civ people always tell on themselves in the end.
@Qbitzerre One question: did you watch the video before replying?
@ruemaleficent @franklinlopez you're giving me a homework assignment, professor? Am I not qualified to sit at your feet?
Or are you unable express your points concisely?
Stop wasting your valuable time on me, please. I will not reciprocate.
@Qbitzerre I will never understand how someone will be so snide and snippy about an opinion on a video without watching the video. Buh bye.
@ruemalefice t@kolektiva.social because you earned it by suggesting I watch an hour+ long video with your response repeating, redundantly, your assertions about civilization that I largely agreed with - instead of responding to the substance of my own comment.
You want me to dedicate time to your precious video? Pay attention yourself.
If you want to be persuasive, you must respect people. Otherwise, they might respond in kind with the same condescension.
