HH 49: Interstellar Jet from Webb

What's at the tip of this interstellar jet? First let's consider the jet: it is being expelled by a star system just forming and is cataloged as Herbig-Haro 49 (HH 49). The star system expelling this jet is not visible -- it is off to the lower right. The complex conical structure featured in this infrared image by the James Webb Space Telescope also includes another jet cataloged as HH 50.

The fast jet particles impact the surrounding interstellar gas and form shock waves that glow prominently in infrared light -- shown here as reddish-brown ridges. This JWST image also resolved the mystery of the unusual object at HH 49's tip: it is a spiral galaxy far in the distance. The blue center is therefore not one star but many, and the surrounding circular rings are actually spiral arms.

A glowing, circular nebula with a bright, textured outer ring that fades into a dark background filled with stars. The center of the ring is a smooth, teal-blue area with faint, cloudy structures and small bright points. The ring itself appears reddish-orange with intricate filaments extending outward like wispy tendrils. Surrounding the nebula, the dark space is scattered with bright white stars, some with distinct diffraction spikes.

JWST NIRCam image of Arp 142, also known as NGC 2936 and NGC 2937, or the Penguin and the Egg.

In this wide view, we see the Penguin (laying on its back) and the Egg, and the foreground edge-on spiral PGC 1237172. There are also a large number of distant galaxies, some seen as tiny spirals and ellipticals, and many appearing as dots.

Arp 142, two interacting galaxies, take up less than a third of the frame. At the top is NGC 2937, nicknamed the Egg. Its center is brighter and whiter. There are six diffraction spikes atop its gauzy blue layers. At the center is NGC 2936, nicknamed the Penguin. In this view it is resting on its back, facing up. Its beak-like region points toward and above the Egg. Where the eye would be is a small, opaque yellow spiral. The Penguin’s distorted arms and thin red dust lanes from the bird’s beak, back, and tail. The tail is wide and layered, like a beta fish’s tail. A semi-transparent blue hue traces the Penguin and extends from the galaxy, creating an upside-down U over top of both galaxies. At bottom center-right is another galaxy seen from the side, pointing at an angle. It is largely light blue. Its length appears approximately as long as the Egg’s height. There are several foreground stars with large, bright blue diffraction spikes. The wide black background is filled with tiny, extremely distant galaxies.
