Made some important and much belated progress getting my new (replacement) Home Assistant installation up and running this afternoon.

The Pi 5 with boot from NVMe has been set up for a while. Today I have:

- Installed Mosquitto on the host.
- Configured separate client credentials for Zigbee2MQTT and Home Assistant.
- Installed Zigbee2MQTT under Docker and got it talking to Mosquitto.
- Installed Home Assistant under Docker and got it talking to Mosquitto.

Then to verify everything I added four Tradfri Zigbee network routers to the system and they showed up straight away on Home Assistant 😬

This is the breakthrough I needed to make, to be able to decommission the old service.

Replaced old 1950s receptacle w new one. Added clamp-on current sensors out to a #Zigbee unit in a separate (plastic) box to contact #HomeAssistant.

Broke the tab off to split the receptacle and applied sensors to track dehumidifier and sump pump separately.

Needed a sensor flip to fix current dir, but it works nicely now. I get an email if the pump comes on!

Only in the house 6mo or so, and don't think the sump pump has run yet. We'll see how spring goes – probably the riskiest period.

This is the little 2channel #zigbee monitor I'm using. Looks like lots of people using something similar. It has two current sensor clamps, so it's nicely non invasive.

Not wild about it using 120V power as a battery or an adapter would prob be safer, but I've put the thing in a utility box to keep the 120V supply lines safely covered.

Can sense up to 80A of current

Learning more than I'd hoped was necessary about the #HomeAssistant #zigbee device handling.

There are python add-ons called "Quirks" that let devices add sensor entities after the fact for ZHA and Z2m.

I've got a 2-channel power sensor I'm trying to add and it seems to be on the bleeding edge of supported devices.

I see dev work going on, so might be the easiest path forward is to wait a few weeks.

But hey, I learned about Quirks today, so that's a new corner of HA for me.

Proof of concept. I hacked-up the AC power cable for a simple desk fan, added crimp connectors to the wires, and plugged it into this cheap Zigbee switch. I dislike the crimping job (the gray crimps make me nervous, and the red ones are a bit too long for the switch), but functionally this circuit works and the fan can be switched on/off.

My plan is to modify various lamps around the apartment, turning them into smart lamps. I bought several cheap Zigbee switches like this one for a few dollars each (China). I chose Zigbee instead of WiFi to ensure they couldn't "phone home", and to unify my IOT stuff under one app (Home Assistant). The goal is to replace my TP-Link Kasa WiFi smart switches with Zigbee alternatives managed by Home Assistant running on a Pi4.

#IOT#Zigbee#DIY

I'm automating stuff at the family farm using #homeassistant ; lights, smoke alarms, stove fire preventers, heaters.

It's inspiring to see so many iot devices support #ZigBee but also infuriating that 50% of the ones I've encountered has something fucky with their zigbee implementation. It's also somewhat concerning that the mains-connected zb router devices I've found will drop off immediately when the power goes out. The thought of not getting alerts about a fire in the barn if the power's out, concerns me.

I've got my eye on #matter , but I can't find compatible smoke alarms in Norway (so I can be confident they comply with local regulations, and return them if they're bad), and only limited reviews of ones available from abroad.

I see there's matteralpha.com/category/smoke and community.home-assistant.io/t/ but idk.

Can anyone recommend a mains-powered zigbee router device with a built-in battery, that'll keep it routing for at least 1 hour if it loses power?

Alternatively, a small (max 20*10*10cm) #ups that'll power a zb router or other tiny device for 1 hour? #NUT #networkUpsTools compatibility is a big plus

Sniffing Zigbee traffic sounds complicated? In my latest guide, I show how to capture and analyze Zigbee communication using Wireshark, ember-zli, and an EFR32-based sniffer.

I have a #zigbee power plug that turns off for no reason. It was a batch of 2, both with that problem, but I lost track of one.

Anyway, that is not what you want from a power plug. But I think I found a way to not let it go to waste.
I needed to battery manage my wall mounted tablet, and since it'd be turning on and off semi-regularly, the odd turning off is not a big deal.

Even a half broken device can do useful work!
