BBC correspondent Mark Lowen has been deported from Turkey after being arrested in Istanbul on Wednesday.

Lowen had been in Turkey for several days to report on the ongoing protests that were sparked by the Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu's arrest last week.

Mark Lowen said: "To be detained and deported from the country where I previously lived for five years and for which I have such affection has been extremely distressing. Press freedom and impartial reporting are fundamental to any democracy."

"After 22 years of power grabs, the seizure of all state institutions and severe oppression aimed at reshaping Turkish citizens into Islamofascist minions, Turkey is striking back against President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s authoritarianism.
In cities across the country, including the regime’s strongholds, protests have been ongoing for the past week."

“… 1,133 people had been detained for "illegal activities" amid the protests, which were banned by authorities last week.”

People are protesting the arrest of an #Erdogan political rival, Ekrem #Imamoglu. Journalists have also been arrested for covering the protests.

Also, Imamoglu’s 35-year-old university diploma (degree) — a requirement to run for president— was taken away a bit ago. Suddenly errors were found in how it was awarded.

"Tens of thousands of protesters have taken part in demonstrations across Turkey after the main rival to the country's President Erdogan was formally arrested and charged with corruption.

Ekrem Imamoglu, the mayor of Istanbul, was due to be selected as the Republican People's Party's (CHP) 2028 presidential nominee in a vote on Sunday.

In response to his arrest, Sunday night saw a ramping up of the worst unrest the country has seen in more than a decade - with protesters fired upon with tear gas and rubber bullets."
