I've had a tiny revelation about one reason why #murderbot is so popular, or why I like it so much. It's because it's a pretty good hacker, getting systems designed to be antagonistic to it to work for it and obey it. That's a pretty attractive power in modern life. We're surrounded by things which are supposed to work for us but are actually obstructive and antagonistic and manipulative. To have something just push through all that is really appealing.

The last scene of EXIT STRATEGY makes me cry and also do like little happy dance squeals every single time.

It's just so WHOLESOME.

OK, as you may notice I recently discovered Martha #Wells #Murderbot series and since it is really really great I had to finish it in February. The audio books read by Kevin R. Free are marvelous - and I just discovered three additional short stories by Wells from the Murderbot universe!! They are listed on the Murderbot Wiki webpage, will read those on the weekend, they are available for free online.

This is one of my favorite Murderbot quotes on this large decal now on my older Intel MBP... Current plan is to put it to use as my ham radio laptop, for which is should be massive overkill, even if I need to run VirtualBox for something. But the laptop has been gathering dust for like 4 years now and I'll feel better if it's useful for something.

I'm home from my foot surgery this morning. Doc said everything went great and other than my foot being wrapped up like a mummy and in a medical "boot" I have yet to experience any ill effects, not even any pain. I expect that will change once the local anesthetic wears off. :)

Now it's time for lunch and s little BG# I think. "BG3 is my Rise and Fall of Sanctuary Moon" I say to the three people that will understand these references.

I’ve just heard that Martha Wells’ wonderful “Murderbot” books are being adapted into a series for Apple TV, which is coming out in May. Alexander Skarsgård is starring.

What was fascinating to me was how his casting sparked hundreds of comments from readers of the book. While the Murderbot is canonically non-gendered (and thinks of itself as “it”), readers were really divided about how they imagined it, pretty evenly divided between thinking of it as looking feminine, masculine, or ambiguous. People who heard the audiobook (with a male narrator) were more to that side, of course.

I think the whole debate speaks really well of Wells’ writing ability.
