Researchers discovered that between 2015 and 2016, hate crime rates rose by about 13%, despite a 2.7% decrease in overall crime rates. According to a recent F.B.I. report, hate crimes increased nationwide by a total of 44% between 2020 and 2021 in 16 of the biggest cities.
Criminologists have found that hate crimes against minorities and immigrant groups, which are seen as the root causes of social problems and economic dislocation, rise during times of economic disruption and uncertainty.
