A German national (Jessica Brösche), a British national (Becky Burke), and now a Canadian national (Jasmine Mooney) have all been detained at the border and placed in ICE custody under dubious pretenses.
It is time for other nations to issue a travel warning to tourists headed to the US.
@MNSpy
I am beginning to wonder if these cases are paperwork lapses, out of ignorance or laziness. In the past, they would have had a slap on the wrist warning, but now, , they are treated very harshly, and incompetently.
I think the Snowbirds better get out of America before the whole 30-day limit "alien registration" kicks in. Even if they follow the rules, we can expect malicious nitpicking of paperwork combined with incompetence.
@JPK_elmediat @MNSpy Here‘s another case. “Only” 24 hours detained before deportation. https://thetrek.co/a-german-thru-hiker-has-been-detained-deported-and-banned-from-the-us-without-a-hearing-heres-what-you-need-to-know/
In the case of the British backpacker, the original issue was with Canada - probably not realising that the 6-month visa-free rule does not apply to land entry via the US.
Patterns I’m seeing:
- Land borders
- Entering together with a US citizen
- Self employed/freelancers
Those factors seem to be used to interpret intent to overstay, then deliberately detain.
@pmdj @JPK_elmediat @MNSpy and they are all women? #pattern
@edgeofeurope @pmdj @JPK_elmediat @MNSpy
Since 2023, the US has been refusing entry to many single women travelers. In the case of several they were traveling with work groups.
Reasons given include ‘might be sex workers,’ other workers, human trafficking victims etc. Earning any income from US (influencer, only fans, etc) seem to be reasons too. <<I’m kind of fed up with influencers from anywhere, so I can understand that point>>
One suspicion that many have, especially now, is that it is also a way to prevent claims of US citizenship as the deportations are almost entirely of women under 40. Especially since ‘are you pregnant’ is one of the questions that was frequently asked
Prior most victims weren’t White and were usually immediately deported. So it wasn’t a big issue in the media.

@nilsskirnir @edgeofeurope @JPK_elmediat @MNSpy US immigration has for a long time been arbitrary & problematic, and yes, previously that mainly affected non-white people - I briefly recounted what we observed on our trip in 2014 in this thread: https://mstdn.social/@pmdj/113860813239609275
Also unnerving are the CBP checkpoints *inside* the US. We ran into one of those in New Mexico a few weeks later. We weren't expecting it, so I was searching our bags for the passports while the cop was watching me, hand on gun.
@pmdj @edgeofeurope @JPK_elmediat @MNSpy
Anything within 100 miles (160 km) of any border or any international body of water subject to CBP. Along with the expected international airports and other POE.
This covers about two thirds of the US population and most of the areas visited by international tourists
