This book has impressed and pulled me in me like few others this year: *Ducks* by Kate Beaton of .
It is a about Beaton's time working for different mining companies in Canada's oil sands to pay off her student loans. It is at once deeply personal and intimate, as well as in touch with so many big issues of our age: extractive , inequality, damage, settler , toxic masculinity and misogyny...
I found it incredibly powerful and read it all in one sitting, but it's the kind of book that I envision coming back to many times.

p. 11 from the graphic novel Ducks by Kate Beaton. It consists of 4 panels talking about Cape Breton in Canada's Nova Scotia province and the relationship of its people to their home. The first two panels show landscape scenes from Cape Breton with text describing how its inhabitants love it, but often have to leave to find work. The other two panels depict the narrator, Kate, talking to the reader about how poverty and lack of a future at home permeate culture of her home.
