#Historical #fiction recommendation: *Act of Oblivion* by #RobertHarris, a fascinating account of the hunt for some of the "regicides", supporters of Oliver Cromwell's regime and his assistants in the execution of Charles I, after the restoration, in a sweeping narrative covering Europe and #NewEngland.
Overall, both sides of this conflict are odious: The Puritans are religious zealots of the worst type, keen to impose their strict religious rule on all around them; the British royalist regime is oppressive and brutal. Nonetheless, the authors succeeds in painting (most of) his characters as sympathetic at least some of the time, and human, while not shying away from their nastier behaviours and convictions.
Gripping read, and great to learn more about the English civil war and its aftermath, as well as the early years of the New England colonies.
