a big welcome to @aroacefluffykitties !! :QueerCat_Trans:

(that proud moment when your bf joins mastodon :hopping_bunny_tongue: :QueerCatHeart_Pride: )

@ceylon EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

@ceylon @aroacefluffykitties I want my partner to join but they are still on BlueSky because it is far, FAR easier to use. I've sent a lot of funds to Mastodon to fix this -- like.. a lot. Bug them about it.

@codinghorror @aroacefluffykitties personally I don't find mastodon hard to use at all, but I'm also a very techy person so its pretty easy for me to find my way around things. I don't think it was difficult for my partner to get used to, but I don't want to speak for him.

I just explained the basic basics of how the fediverse and decentralization works(in the least tech nerd way possible, so he or any other non techy person could understand haha). then just walked him through the process of picking a server, going through the application process if the server had one, and then I think he pretty well had it all figured out from there. maybe a few questions here and there, but it seemed like he adjusted easily. But again that would be more of a question for him to answer than me.

if you're kind of just like "oh there's this cool thing, you should get this cool thing!" but they don't understand why it's different than the platform they're already on wouldn't give them any reasons to consider one vs the other. talking about my experience with it being a wonderful and accepting community and a great space to find community when you're in a place where you don't have that option irl makes it seem more appealing. and also if you're passionate about it and express that, they might want to join just to get to understand and share that passion with you a bit more!

I wouldn't force it if they really don't want to, but talking about the benefits and comparing it to other platforms they're on might help. I have no experience with bluesky so I can't speak for what it's like to switch from there or how the community is there. personally I love decentralization and getting to pick a server that's part of a niche you're interested in is really cool! and I think it was cool for my boyfriend too.

but #1 explain it, compare and contrast, list reasons they might like it better, suggest a small trail run(they could always delete it if they really didn't like it), don't force it, answer all their questions, maybe bring up cool facts, and be patient with them!

if its something you express passion about and enjoy, that alone might be a reason that they might want to join or at least just try it out.

it might be scary at first, I struggle with change and so does my boyfriend, but we both love it here! just take things slow is probably my best advice. this is the first social media account I've ever really had and I had been going back and forth on if I should make on or not for like 2-3 years before I finally made one.

wishing you both the best, and will be happy to welcome them should they choose to join!! :QueerCat_Enby:
