Friends of mine in the '70s started a cat-worship cult because they had all become functioning atheists, but still had a strong impulse to bow down and worship something indifferent to them.

So they picked my girlfriend's cat Abraxas—purely arbitrarily. And Abraxas never reigned hellfire or damnation on us. Disdain, of course, but that's cuz "cat", duh . .

I now see this compulsion is kind of common.
