Duchess of Umbrage

Noly likes to rest his giant, heavy head on the farrier’s back and fall asleep, which makes the farrier cranky, so my niece is conscripted to hold him up. This guy is serious about his beauty sleep. He’s the only horse I have ever seen fall all the way the fuck over while snoozing in the pasture.

Speaking of my farrier, he’s absolutely the greatest and lives a weird life. Recently the aspiring Joe Exotic dipshits at the horrible depressing Austin “Zoo” let one of their zebras founder and he got called in to fix it. Zebras are notoriously surly so they had to sedate the heck out of it and knock it down before he could work on it. Packed it in ice to keep it from overheating from the anesthesia because it’s about a million degrees in Austin right now. Poor thing had several hoof abscesses in addition to the laminitis. That place is a hellhole.

@iBlame is Noly one of those Iberian warmbloods? He’s gorgeous, and his feet look entirely too good to belong to a TB.

@donkeyherder He’s a Holsteiner with very sturdy and capable feet. He’s pretty handsome, too, and he knows it.

@iBlame Holy. Shit. That's horrifying, and your farrier is a hero.

@iBlame not just a kind man but a brave one as well. I have another Texas equestrian friend who got a little into zonkeys a couple years ago. She’s one of the best hands I know, and she says zebras are not only wild, they’re extremely aggressive. (She’s down to just one extremely cute zonkey to go with her lovely Iberian warmbloods, and the zonkey is not remotely safe to handle.)

@donkeyherder Zonkeys! Oh hell no. They are adorbs but I wouldn’t touch one with a 100-yard pole.

@iBlame she was going through some shit, you know how it is 😂

@donkeyherder Indeed I do. That’s how I ended up with 98% of my own menagerie.
