MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today in Labor History April 10, 1919: Mexican troops ambushed and assassinated Emiliano Zapata, revolutionary indigenous and peasant leader. Zapata’s Rebel Army of the South played a major role in the overthrow of the dictator, Porfirio Diaz, defeating the federal army in the Battle of Cuautla in 1911. Also in 1911, Zapata began implementing the Plan de Ayala, redistributing land in the regions controlled by his army to peasant farmers. However, when former revolutionary Madero took over, he disavowed the Zapatistas, calling them simple bandits. He implemented a scorched earth policy, burning villages and imprisoning survivors in forced labor camps, in his quest to hunt down Zapata. Madero’s successor, Venustiano Carranza, continued his scorched earth policies and finally succeeded in killing Zapata in 1919.</p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/workingclass" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>workingclass</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/LaborHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>LaborHistory</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/mexico" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>mexico</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Revolution" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Revolution</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/zapata" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>zapata</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/indigenous" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>indigenous</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/rebel" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>rebel</span></a></p>

MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today in Labor History November 17, 1983: The Zapatista Army of National Liberation (AKA: EZLN, Zapatistas) was founded in Mexico by former members of the National Liberation Forces (FLN), allied with indigenous leaders from Chiapas. However, the indigenous Chiapans did not go for the Marxist-Leninist vanguardist approach of the FLN, leading to a more libertarian-socialist orientation for the EZLN. The Zapatistas, named after revolutionary indigenous leader, Emiliano Zapata, have been at war with the Mexican government since 1994. However, in recent years they have avoided military conflict, focusing, instead, on local and international organizing for indigenous rights. They continue to control large amounts of territory in the southern state of Chiapas.</p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/workingclass" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>workingclass</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/LaborHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>LaborHistory</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/zapatistas" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>zapatistas</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/zapata" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>zapata</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/chiapas" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>chiapas</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/indigenous" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>indigenous</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/mexico" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>mexico</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/socialism" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>socialism</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/anarchism" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>anarchism</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/marxism" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>marxism</span></a></p>

MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today in Labor History May 25, 1911: Mexican President Porfirio Díaz resigned after a popular uprising (the Mexican Revolution). Diaz had been dictator for thirty years and was despised by the overwhelming majority of Mexicans. He took power in 1867 by overthrowing Archduke Maxmillian of Austria. As dictator, he opened up Mexico to imperialist exploitation to a degree not seen with any of his predecessors. For example, oil production went up from 10,000 barrels a day to 13 million between 1901 and 1913. Mexicans rose up against him in the revolution of 1911, led by Pancho Villa, Emiliano Zapata and Madero, and the anarchist Magonistas in Baja California.</p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/WorkingClass" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>WorkingClass</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/LaborHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>LaborHistory</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/anarchism" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>anarchism</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/mexico" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>mexico</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Revolution" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Revolution</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/RicardoFloresMagon" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>RicardoFloresMagon</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/zapata" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>zapata</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/PanchoVilla" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>PanchoVilla</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/dictatorship" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>dictatorship</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/imperialism" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>imperialism</span></a></p>

MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today in Labor History December 20, 1968: John Steinbeck died on this date. He was most famous for novels written from the perspective of working men and women, the poor and downtrodden, including East of Eden, Grapes of Wrath, Of Mice and Men, Tortilla Flats and Cannery Row. In 1935, he joined the communist League of American Writers. He supported Arthur Miller when he faced contempt charges for refusing to cooperate with HUAC. The FBI and the IRS harassed him throughout his career. Yet he wrote glowingly about U.S. troops during the Vietnam War. He won the Pulitzer Prize for Grapes of Wrath in 1939, and the Nobel Prize in 1962. He also wrote the screenplay for the Elia Kazan film, Viva Zapata, staring Marlon Brando. </p><p><a href="https://youtu.be/WKWGAGPy_kw" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">youtu.be/WKWGAGPy_kw</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/LaborHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>LaborHistory</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/workingclass" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>workingclass</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/zapata" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>zapata</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Steinbeck" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Steinbeck</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/nobelprize" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>nobelprize</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/fiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>fiction</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/pulitzer" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>pulitzer</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/poverty" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>poverty</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/fbi" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>fbi</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/communism" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>communism</span></a> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/bookstadon" class="u-url mention">@<span>bookstadon</span></a></span></p>
