Little monsters have been know to slip quietly into kitchens when no one is around and sneak a sip of two of freshly brewed sweetness. Gretchen K DeahlMidnight Monsters: A Startled Moontinkifer<br>
Do not be afraid. Like many night creatures, they just wish to be left alone. These secretive beings often hide in the shadows, except when the moon is full and bright. The midnight moon is their time of wonder and if you happen to be in the right place at the right time, you just may witness some magical happenings. This particular midnight monster is called Moontinkifer and can be found high up in the Balkan mountain range on the border between Bulgaria and eastern Serbia . It was not easy getting to this destination, but I have found it worth the effort, expense and skinned knees. Legend says that if one is lucky enough to spot them during the day, they appear as drab, colorless creatures, almost invisible against the mountain landscape of rocks and boulders. They shine (literally) at night when they come out of their hiding places to dance. Moonlight causes a shimmering transformation from dull gray to a luminous rainbow colored glow! It is believed that the glimmer of incandescent color and magical movements is their way of attracting a mate. Otherwise, they appear to be quite shy, non-aggressive individuals, who unfortunately, startle easily.<br>

This sleepy Guardian Monster is called Icckelby Slumberton.<br>
Personality: A great believer in the power of dreams, he displays a sweet, mild-mannered disposition when awake, which unfortunately, isn’t often.<br>
<br>
Potential Issues: He has a tendency to nod off during conversations lasting more than ten minutes. He may also spend countless hours dreaming about eating instead of actually eating, so when he wakes up he is usually extremely hungry. Also, if he falls asleep in the sun, the tips of his tail may sprout flowers.<br>
<br>
Rules of Etiquette: Approach this monster quietly before attempting contact. When ready, gently whisper “hello” and “please wake up” into his ear. No one likes to be rudely shaken or shouted into consciousness and he is no exception. Within a few minutes of soft verbal nudges his eyes should open. Expect a yawn of epic proportions. Have lots of whipped cream or bowls of puffed rice on hand as he will undoubtedly be starving.<br>

What the heck is a Guardian Monster?<br>
I am so glad you asked. Perhaps you've heard of guardian angels -- those lovely, winged beings who guide and protect you? Well, when the job requires a specialized "monster point of view", these eager fellows step up! They may not be as attractive as their more famous counterparts, but they are very loyal and work hard on your behalf. Most of the time. They do have a wee tendency to get their feelings hurt if they are not feeling appreciated. And yes, they have been known to play a practical joke now and again, just to amuse themselves, BUT, for the most part, they are quite reliable and will be there when you need them.<br>
<br>
A word of caution: I have not yet met any guardian monster whom one might call pretty. They are not. In fact some can be downright ugly. Depending on their underlying natures and current mood, they might also appear grouchy, whiney, bad-tempered or exhibit any number of not-so-nice personalities. That is not their fault -- they were born that way. So, if you are looking for pretty, fairy-like, always-smiling, ever-friendly types of beings, this is most definitely not the poster for you. These fellows, despite their diminutive stature, mean business. They were built to handle stress, anger, fear, all kinds of unpleasant feelings, and they look like it!<br>

Inner Monsters don't necessarily look like "real" monsters. They are part of that constant chatter going on in the background of our own minds, shaping our view of the world. They can appear in a variety of forms, from human, animal, monster-like, even as plants! Most of us... ahem... keep our inner beasties tucked "safely" in the closet, hoping they won't decide to reveal themselves at inopportune times, causing all manner of embarrassing moments, like sudden extreme shyness, unexplained crying jags, overwhelming crankiness, or laughing out loud for no apparent reason, among others. Sound familiar?<br>
The solution is (drum roll please...) to MEET your inner monsters, SEEK to understand them, EMBRACE them as yours, and then LEARN about yourself through them. Bring them out of your personal inner-verse and set them free!<br>

I am the official human spokesperson for the Guardian Monster Guild, editor of the "Monster Times & Review" and author of the glamorous tell-all book, "What Monsters Want". Gretchen K DeahlBaby Monsters: Monsters have babies too.<br>
Baby monsters are even harder to find than the elusive "baby" pigeon. Very few folks can say that they've seen them, let alone created their portraits. I have been lucky. As you might imagine, monster parents can be a bit protective. Mothers in particular. They consider us (humans) more than a bit strange and potentially dangerous. It took most of my free time, lots of monster "treats" and carefully followed Monster Etiquette to befriend just a few of them. Even then, I felt a bit nervous and on edge as I made sketches of their most beloved offspring. It is always a good idea to remind oneself that monsters are ultimately unpredictable creatures, and should be given proper respect at all times.<br>
<br>
This teeny, weeny baby is about the size of a large acorn. I found her around twilight, huddled on the forest floor, hiding amongst the fallen leaves and acorns, waiting for her mom to return with dinner. I kept my distance while I hastily made her portrait, knowing that she was somewhere close by. The last thing I wanted to do was make this sweet baby anxious.<br>
