By Wendsler Nosie, Apache Stronghold, March 13, 2025, via

"In the heart of in lies a place that my people, the , still hold above all others. This place is Chi'chil Biłdagoteel, also known as Oak Flat. To us, it is more than a stretch of land; it is sacred and holy. It is where our ancestors walked, where we gather to pray, to carry out ceremonies passed down through generations, and to speak to our Creator.

"This land is part of who we are as a people, and its spirit is bound to our own.
Now, the federal government plans to give our sacred Oak Flat to a multinational owned by the Chinese Communist Party. This will not just scar the land; it will destroy it, poisoning the environment and trampling on our tribal rights. But the deepest wound will be the loss of our spiritual home, a place our people cannot exist without. We are fighting this in the courts, all the way to the . But this is about more than law and policy—this is about survival of our way of life and the spirit of this sacred land.

KITWE, Zambia (AP) — "Authorities and environmentalists in Zambia fear the long-term impact of an acid spill at a Chinese-owned mine that contaminated a major river and could potentially affect millions of people after signs of were detected at least 100 kilometers (60 miles) downstream.

"The spill happened on Feb. 18 when a tailings dam that holds acidic waste from a in the north of the country collapsed, according to investigators from the Engineering Institution of Zambia.

"The collapse allowed some 50 million liters of waste containing concentrated acid, dissolved solids and heavy metals to flow into a stream that links to the , Zambia’s most important waterway, the engineering institution said.

"'It is an disaster really of catastrophic consequences,' said Chilekwa Mumba, an environmental activist who works in Zambia’s Copperbelt Province."

Cargo ship captain arrested over collision in North Sea, owner tells BBC

Fire continues as ship's captain arrested, future of both vessels remains uncertain

11 March 2025

"Summary

- The man arrested by Humberside police is the captain of the Solong cargo ship, the vessel's owner tells the BBC

- Earlier, the police force said that a 59-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter, following the North Sea collision

- Assistant Chief Coastguard John Craig says flames are still visible on the Solong, with salvage plans in place for both vessels

- One crew member of the Portuguese cargo ship is "assumed deceased", a UK minister says, as the transport secretary says both Solong and US oil tanker Stena Immaculate are expected to stay afloat

- Owners of the cargo ship say it was not carrying sodium cyanide, as previously reported, but had four empty containers that had once held the toxic chemical."

Chance of Japan's raised to 80%: government panel

KYODO NEWS KYODO NEWS - Jan 16, 2025

"The chance of a megaquake occurring in the Nankai Trough within the next 30 years has increased to approximately 80 percent, the government's earthquake investigation panel said Wednesday.

"Recalculations are made every January, taking into account the passage of time. The probability of a magnitude 8 to 9 quake along the trough in the Pacific had previously been estimated at 70 to 80 percent since 2018.

"Noting that M6.0-level quakes have repeatedly occurred in Japan since the temblor on the Noto Peninsula, central Japan, on Jan. 1, 2024, the panel's chairman Naoshi Hirata, professor emeritus at the University of Tokyo, emphasized the need for continued vigilance as active seismic activity will likely continue for a while.

"Such seismic activity has not been observed in Japan before, making 'it difficult to predict when it might subside,' Hirata said.

"Earlier this week, the Japan Meteorological Agency issued its second-ever Nankai Trough Extra Information after an earthquake of magnitude of 6.6 struck southwestern Japan.

"But while the jolting occurred beneath the western edge of the hypothesized epicenter of a Nankai Trough quake, the agency did not issue a special alert as it was not deemed to have immediately raised the risk of a megaquake."

In , fears mount of a massive 2011-style earthquake on disaster anniversary

Scientists warn seismic energy accumulating under the off has the potential to trigger a magnitude-8.8 earthquake

by Julian Ryall
Updated: 9:48am, 11 Mar 2025

"As Japan marks the anniversary of the earthquake and tsunami that devastated large areas of the country’s northeast in 2011, experts have warned that the seismic conditions in an underwater trench off Hokkaido hint at another powerful tremor.

"A five-year study of the Chishima Trench, which runs parallel to the east coast of Hokkaido about 150km (93 miles) offshore, has determined that the two plates are not slipping past each other. Instead, sections of the plates appear to be joined together but that when they do inevitably break free, a huge amount of seismic energy will be unleashed.

"Experts at the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology have been studying the trench with scientists from Tohoku University and Hokkaido University and believe the plates may have been fused together since the last major earthquake in the region in the 17th century.

"A separate report released by the government has stated that the likelihood of a quake with a magnitude of at least 8.8 in the trench within the next 30 years stands at between 7 per cent and 40 per cent.

"That might sound like an inexact likelihood and timescale, said Fumiaki Tomita, assistant professor at Tohoku University’s research centre for the prediction of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, but he pointed out that predicting seismic activity was notoriously difficult."

'Nervous and rushed': Massive plant cleanup exposes workers to high radiation and stress

by MARI YAMAGUCHI
Mon, March 10, 2025 at 10:01 PM EDT

OKUMA, Japan (AP) — "The plant's radiation levels have significantly dropped since the cataclysmic meltdown 14 years ago Tuesday. Workers walk around in many areas wearing only surgical masks and regular clothes.

"It's a different story for those who enter the reactor buildings, including the three damaged in the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. They must use maximum protection — full facemasks with filters, multi-layered gloves and socks, shoe covers, hooded hazmat coveralls and a waterproof jacket, and a helmet.

"As workers remove melted fuel debris from the reactors in a monumental nuclear cleanup effort that could take more than a century, they are facing both huge amounts of psychological stress and dangerous levels of radiation."

BBC: Crew member missing and vessels still on fire after collision in North Sea

March 10, 2025

: We are extremely concerned about multiple hazards

"Greenpeace says it's 'extremely concerned' about 'multiple toxic hazards' from the North Sea ship collision.

"We've been reporting that the cargo ship was carrying 15 containers of the toxic chemical sodium cyanide. It is not clear if this has entered the water.

"The tanker was transporting jet fuel for the US government, some of which is spilling into the sea.

"'As more information emerges about what the ships were carrying, we are extremely concerned about the multiple toxic hazards these chemicals could pose to marine life,' Paul Johnston, a senior scientist at the Greenpeace Research Laboratories at Exeter University, tells the AFP news agency.

"'The jet fuel that entered the water close to a breeding ground for harbour porpoises is toxic to fish and other sea creatures,' he adds."

Holding the Line in – A Personal Update (March 9, 2025)

by , Organizer of the

"Hey Friends,

Wanted to check in with an update on what’s happening in Gaza and what we’ve been up to at the Gaza Soup Kitchen. Things are still unbelievably tough, but we’re keeping the fire going—literally and figuratively.

Food and Supplies – It’s Only Getting Harder

Food isn’t being allowed in, and essentials like vegetables and meat are nearly impossible to find. Many people haven’t seen fresh produce or protein in weeks. Restaurants are shutting down because they simply don’t have ingredients to cook with, and the exchange rate is climbing again, making everything even more expensive for people who have nothing left.

Even with all that, we’re still cooking every day. We’ve managed to keep going, and right now, we have enough food supplies to last about two more weeks. After that? We’ll figure it out, just like we always do. We may have to scale back food parcels, but we’re determined to keep meals coming. Chicken is likely off the menu—without widespread refrigeration, there’s no way to store it safely.

Here’s what we did just today:
✅ Cooked at all five of our locations
✅ Delivered 75 food boxes to struggling families
✅ Sent 150 meals to hospitals
✅ Distributed 10 containers of drinking water

Life for Displaced Families – No Relief in Sight

Nothing is improving for displaced families. They’re still living in tents that don’t protect them from the rain or the heat. Supplies are drying up, medicine is scarce, and hospitals are barely functioning. It’s a grinding crisis. People are resilient, but you can feel the exhaustion setting in.

I know that for many outside, Gaza isn’t in the headlines like it was before. People move on, news cycles shift, attention fades. But the suffering hasn’t stopped— are still being targeted, families are still struggling, and there’s no real ceasefire in place. We can’t afford to look away.

The Money Talk – Spending More Than We’re Bringing In

My displaced Palestinian accountant (yes, really) sent me a message after going through our February bank statement. His exact words? 'Hani, you’re spending way more than you brought in. Maybe slow it down?'

I told him straight up — 'Not happening.' The community doesn’t need us to slow down; they need us to keep going. We’re not reckless, but we’re preparing for Ramadan—stocking up food, keeping locations ready, and making sure we can feed as many people as possible in the weeks ahead.

What’s Next?

We need:
✔️ More aid to get through
✔️ Access to essential supplies
✔️ Rebuilding materials to be allowed in

Until that happens, we’ll keep cooking. We’re not stopping.

Thanks for standing with us—this is only possible because of you. Your support means the world, and I hope you know that. More soon.

Hani

P.S. Please know that I hate talking about money—I’d much rather focus on the impact we’re making. But just to give you a sense of how far your support goes:

$30 buys a food box for a family in need

$200 delivers drinking water to 200 families

$8 provides a nourishing meal to someone who hasn't eaten in days

$200 runs our medical point for an entire day, providing care and comfort to 70+ people

Every dollar counts and makes a real difference in the lives of those we’re trying to help. Your generosity is what keeps us going."

cuts off supply to , affecting a plant producing drinking water

By MELANIE LIDMAN and SAMY MAGDY
Updated 5:09 PM EDT, March 9, 2025

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — "Israel cut off the electricity supply to Gaza, officials said Sunday, affecting a desalination plant producing drinking water for part of the arid territory. Hamas called it part of Israel’s '.'

"Israel last week suspended supplies of goods to the territory of more than 2 million , an echo of the siege it imposed in the earliest days of the war.

"Israel is pressing the militant group to accept an extension of the first phase of their ceasefire. That phase ended last weekend. Israel wants to release half of the remaining hostages in return for a promise to negotiate a lasting truce.

"Hamas instead wants to start negotiations on the ceasefire’s more difficult second phase, which would see the release of remaining hostages from Gaza, the withdrawal of Israeli forces and a lasting peace. Hamas is believed to have 24 living hostages and the bodies of 35 others.

"The militant group — which has warned that discontinuing supplies would affect the hostages — said Sunday that it wrapped up the latest round of ceasefire talks with mediators without changes to its position."

Use More Land Globally Than or

Story by Mihai Andrei, February 25, 2025

"The land use of is often criticized in public and political debates. However, a new study shows that something as frivolous as golf courses use up more land globally than solar or wind energy. Golf courses, which often serve a small number of , are also terrible for the and use up a lot of and resources.

Competition for space

"The lush greenery you see on golf courses is a well-maintained lie. Golf courses use enormous amounts of water — sometimes in regions already facing shortages. Maintaining that flawless grass also means heavy reliance on and , which seep into local waterways, harming# wildlife and . To make it even worse, golf courses are apparently competing with renewable energy for space.

"Every acre we allocate to one use is an acre less for another. Currently, more than 38,400 golf courses span the globe, occupying vast stretches of valuable land. Surprisingly, researchers from Germany’s Forschungszentrum Jülich found that countries (especially richer countries like the US, the UK, and Canada) dedicate far more land to golf courses than to or .

"Let’s put this into perspective. If you take the golf courses in just the top ten golfing countries and convert them into renewable energy, you’d get an extra 842 gigawatts (GW) of solar or 659 GW of wind capacity. And to put that into perspective, that’s more than the entire quantity of renewable energy these countries produce and are forecast to have for a few years.

Replacing golf courses with something more useful isn’t a new idea, it’s already happening in some areas. In Japan’s Hyogo Prefecture, an entire golf course now hosts 260,000 solar panels, generating 125 gigawatt-hours annually. Meanwhile, in South Korea, 'screen golf,' indoor simulated golfing experiences, provide a popular, space-efficient alternative to traditional courses."

’s federal cuts threaten communities

They told U.S. House lawmakers that the administration’s “chainsaw approach” to government cuts will disproportionately harm

by Shondiin Silversmith, Mar 6, 2025

"From securing funding for Services and ongoing to increasing investments in infrastructure, education and law enforcement, many Indigenous leaders and organizations are raising the alarm about the devastation that federal funding cuts could bring for .

"More than 60 tribal leaders and organizations from across Indian Country testified over three days to a U.S. House of Representatives Appropriations subcommittee on the federal funding needs of Indigenous people and their communities nationwide.

"'I know there’s never enough funding to go around,' Gila River Indian Community Gov. Stephen Roe Lewis said, and he appreciates how the subcommittee has consistently set aside several days to hear Indian Country’s funding priorities.

"'It is the process that starts the funding decisions for tribal programs, staffing and priorities for this administration,' he added. Tribal leaders and organizations gave five-minute testimonies to the subcommittee from Feb. 25 to Feb. 27.

"Lewis used his five minutes to discuss the Trump administration’s actions and their impact on his community.

"There is 'real fear' within tribal communities about what is happening in Washington, D.C., he said, referencing the freezing of federal funding and the mass firing of federal employees across the government.

[...]

"He added that the cuts are being made without considering how they will impact services. Rather than making the government more efficient and effective, it is 'creating a federal workforce that is paralyzed by fear.'

"Lewis called the administration’s actions and said they will have a disproportionate impact on Indian Country.

"'The government-to-government relationship is only as strong as our federal partner,' he said. 'And right now, there is a real concern that the federal side of this partnership has the real potential of being dismantled.'"
