Chrisps
@ChrisMayLA6 realistically a general strike would need to come from the TUC, or from unions not currently in dispute with their employers to ballot their members in favour of solidarity strikes. It’s something I’d like to happen, but I can understand why some unions that focus primarily on the private sector are rather hesitant to undermine agreements with employers when there is no clear goal in sight. E.g. what would a general strike be called in favour of, specifically? For a general election now? For the RMT, the RCN or CWU to improve their conditions? Or pay in line with inflation? For the minimum wage to rise north of £12.50 an hour? All good ideas, but the goal would need to made clear early on.
This is on top of the fact that union membership remains relatively low. It’s why now, more than ever, everyone needs to #joinaunion - or, even better, unionise your own workplace when there isn’t a union there already. United we stand, divided we fall.
