A few hundred students from the groups had had the audacity to walk out from classes and hold a “die-in” protest on campus — some of the most widely celebrated nonviolent protest tactics available.</p><p>"The crackdown was just getting started. </p><p>Since then, the university has ordered police raids on campus three times, leading to the arrests of over 100 students. Last week, the school expelled four students, three from <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/BarnardCollege" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>BarnardCollege</span></a> one from Columbia. Many dozens of students have faced discipline and suspensions for participating in pro-Palestine protests and speech. </p><p>"Professors have been slandered before Congress, censured, removed from positions, and reportedly pushed into retirement over their support for Palestine and criticism of Israel. The campus has been essentially locked down for almost a year. </p><p>"Again and again, Columbia has shown a willingness to throw <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/students" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>students</span></a>, <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/faculty" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>faculty</span></a>, <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/FreeSpeech" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>FreeSpeech</span></a>, and academic freedom under the bus in acquiescence to a <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/RightWing" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>RightWing</span></a>, <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/ProIsrael" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>ProIsrael</span></a> narrative that treats support for Palestinians as an affront to Jewish safety. </p><p>"For all Columbia’s <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/appeasement" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>appeasement</span></a>, President Donald Trump’s Federal Task Force to Combat Antisemitism announced last week that it would cancel $400 million in <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/FederalGrants" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>FederalGrants</span></a> and contracts to the university.</p><p>"'Columbia has worked overtime to appease,' wrote Layla, a student at Columbia’s School of Social Work, who asked to withhold her last name having faced doxxing attacks and harassment from Zionist groups. 'Students are miserable. Campus is a <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/panopticon" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>panopticon</span></a>. Instead, they have put some of their most vulnerable community members, particularly international students and students of color, at risk.</p><p>"There is no appeasing a political force like the <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/TrumpianRight" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>TrumpianRight</span></a>, intent on a program of destruction. On September 6th, Aysenur was in the <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/WestBank" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>WestBank</span></a> standing alongside <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Palestinians" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Palestinians</span></a> and other demonstrators peacefully protesting illegal Israeli settlements when Israeli forces fired two rounds of gunfire. Aysenur was shot in the head and died shortly after being transported to a hospital in Nablus. She joins the tens of thousands of Palestinians martyred by the Israeli military in the last year, now escalated even further with the brutal invasion of the West Bank. According to the International Solidarity Movement, who she was volunteering with at the time, she is the 18th protester killed in the Palestinian village of <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Beita" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Beita</span></a> since 2020 defending against the illegal settlement expansions.</p><p>"This is a terrible, horrifying loss. Those of us who knew Aysenur ('Ezgi', for many who organized with her) knew her to be a genuine, passionate, and determined person –a voice for the oppressed and the working class internationally. And for her, words alone were not enough. Ezgi was the type of socialist who embodied the true spirit of solidarity. Premiered at the 74th Berlinale, the debut feature won both the juried documentary award and the Audience Award in its section, Panorama—amply deserved honors for its adroit, affecting and infuriating portrayal of a tight-knit Palestinian community resisting Israel’s relentless campaign of expulsion. Basel Adra and Yuval Abraham, two of the co-directors, are also extensively on screen. Adra, whose father was also an activist, offers the film’s primary eyes and ears, both through the offenses he hustles to record at mortal risk—he’s essentially a war photographer who lives inside the war—and through the archival video that conveys his memories of growing up there. Abraham, an Israeli journalist, befriends Adra in the course of reporting, and the two grow closer as he gets invested in the survival of Adra’s community, whose adults and children we see menaced, shot at and pushed into living in a cave as homes, a schoolhouse and other buildings are demolished.</p><p>"The film’s excellence and the courage required to make it are worth underlining amid the fractious politics of this year’s Berlinale, which was lambasted for policing speech about the very issues addressed so cogently by a film the festival programmed and honored. (The latest news at press time was a bizarre clarification from the German Ministry of Culture that the Culture Minister’s applause at the prize ceremony was intended only for the Israeli member of the No Other Land filmmaking team, i.e., Abraham, and not Adra. Abraham reported death threats after making his acceptance speech, whose words echoed his answers here.)
