benx
Wanna ramble a little bit about the #FreeIdeas and #StealMyIdeas hashtags I have been using over the years.

There IS actually a fundamentally political idea behind why I use these hashtags. I'm not just using these as a joke or a meme.

I've been using these hashtags to share my ideas because I am the type of person who comes up with ideas all the time, that I think are amazing (at the time at least). But because I have so many ideas, it's kinda impossible for me to make them all actually happen.

I used to not be so open about sharing all the ideas I have. I would write them down in little notebooks, in the hopes that I could use them as part of some sort of commodity one day.

At one point I did have plan to try and make a career out of being a musician, for example.

My attempt at a music career happened to coincide with the peak usage of online piracy, however.

I wasn't against online piracy, though. My teenage years had been spent engaging in a lot of online piracy and I was fond of continuing that hobby.

And so, instead of rejecting online piracy, as a musician, I fell inline with the anti-copyright #FreeCulture movement that was emerging.

The Free Culture movement rejected copyright controls as they currently stood and led to musicians and other artists seeking out different ways of funding their passion projects.

As a result, the Creative Commons license was created, to allow for the restrictions of copyright protections to be loosened more.

And also, platforms like Patreon and Bandcamp were founded, creating places for artists to share their works for free directly, while still having a method of collecting income to help support themselves and their work.

And so, it is in the spirit of this #FreeCulture movement, that I use these hashtags #FreeIdeas and #StealMyIdeas

It would be cool if, one day, these hashtags took off and other people started using them.

I have no idea how I would make that happen though. 🤷
