The illustration below the text was drawn by underground comics artist Paul Mavrides as a tee shirt design and intervention into the White Night Riots by his prankster activist troupe Union of Concerned Commies.

The White Night Riots were civil unrest that broke out in San Francisco following the lenient sentencing of Dan White, a police officer who murdered two progressive politicians in cold blood and offered the defense that the murders were a result of mood swings from eating junk food.

The words at the top of the sticker are lyrics from anarchist pop collective Chumbawumba (yes, that Chumbawumba)'s song "Give the Anarchist a Cigarette." The song appears on their album Anarchy, and it's a true GenX banger.

Wear masks in public indoor spaces. And wear a mask when you're doin dirt, so the jakes can't see your face.

If Black Lives Matter, recognize that black people are dying of COVID-19 at rates disproportionate to their population and protect their lives by getting vaccinated and wearing a mask.

Consider your comrades with young children who can't go into public spaces, or your disabled comrades with shit immune systems further marginalized by the pandemic.

Do crime, wear a mask, get jabbed.

When someone favorites something we offer on Etsy, we often click through to see what other things they get excited about. Someone favorited a whole bunch of anarchist stickers, including some of ours, and then an "UNVACCINATED UNMASKED UNAFRAID" sticker.

Fuck that noise. Your neighborhood vandal sticker peddler shouldn't be the only source of you hearing this: if you are not immunocompromised to the point where you cannot take a COVID-19 vaccine, go sign up to get it. Yesterday.

Nothing ever burns down by itself, every fire needs a little bit of help.

The quotation is from "The Spirit of Revolt" published in Le Révolté, a newspaper started by Kropotkin and Elisee Reclus (available: theanarchistlibrary.org/librar ).

In context, the quote is an answer to, "How is it that men [...]were capable of [...]attacking in his castle the lord who only yesterday was so formidable? By what miracle were these men, whose wives justly called them cowards, transformed in a day into heroes, marching through bullets and cannon balls to the conquest of their rights?"

Now all the bosses and their stools will think they’re out of luck
To see the spots of black and red where Stickerettes are stuck;
And after they have scratched them off and shook their fists and swore
They'll turn around to find again about a dozen more.

Upon the back of every truck, on packages and cards,
Upon the boats and in the mines and in the railroad yards,
From Maine to California, and even further yet,
No matter where you look you'll see a little Stickerette!

STICK 'EM UP

Song for Stickerette Day: April 29, 1917

By "Shorty."
To the tune of: "Stung Right."

Wherever we may stroll today our fellow slaves will know--
We'll leave a trail of Stickerettes no matter where we go;
On every slave-pen in the land, on every fence and tree
The "agitators" will be stick for every slave to see.

Stuck right, stuck right, S-T-U-C-K,
Stuck right, stuck right, all along the way;
All you slaves who read them, hurry and get wise--
Line up in the O.B.U. and ORGANIZE!

The Industrial Workers of the World () adopted stickers for radical and nefarious uses early. Their "silent agitators," printed by the millions were available for dirt cheap (110 for ~$3.25 in today's dollars) to plaster all over the cities and railways nominally controlled by the wealthy to advertise for strikes and increase membership starting in the 1910s.

You can see a collection of these "stickerettes" featuring classic labor illustrations by Ralph Chaplin here: flickr.com/photos/stickerkitty
