My phone was dead yesterday, but I went on a random ride through residential parts of Seattle. There was a van somewhere in there painted with a gigantic "THIS IS THE 164TH DAY OF THE UKRAINE WAR" on the back window, evidentally updated each morning. "RUSSIA IS A TERRORIST STATE" on a side window. Of course, a Ukraine flag flying on the side.

The Ukraine War started 8 years ago.

@riotmuffin I have never, at any point, had electoralists tell me that voting isn't the most important action.

I have stumped them with "But I'm legally not allowed to vote, so how is that an important action for me here?" (And if they do respond, they often point out how I'm "not from here," as if it's somehow... better that people 'from here' get to make decisions about my life as I live here? Huh.)

Notable also for a SCOTUS case (unnamed, bizarrely) where SCOTUS decided that Kentucky's land leasing laws violated some part of the Constitution and Kentucky just... ignored them. And made the laws even stronger. And other states follow suit.

I've already forgotten if I thought this was for good or bad reasons, but it's Interesting.

Skimmed a book about land leasing under the Homestead Act earlier. Short version is that they murdered a bunch of Native Americans (unmentioned) just to give most of the land to land speculators who would never see it, who turned around and made huge numbers of people into debtor slaves. On top of that, literally everyone was suspicious of everybody else's land claim at all times because squatters could adverse possess what they weren't using.

Manifest Destiny sounds extremely stressful.

"It's to their own detriment when they plagiarise" after introducing the idea that academically punishing students for plagiarism can have lifelong consequences on their career prospects.

"We hurt you to help you xoxoxoxo"

Show thread

Oh man, and teachers fucking outright saying that they suspect plagiarism—a thing to punish—when their students make remarkable improvements.

OK, so you admit it. School isn't about inspiring people to do better. It's about enforcing where other people believe they should be.

One of the most bizarre myths about plagiarism is that a work featuring plagiarism does not reflect the plagiarist's opinion.

"Opinions are like assholes: everyone's got one and they all stink." So, like, I guess plagiarists are the only ones who know how to wipe.

Plagiarism, hundreds of years: "You can just copy and paste stuff, and that's bad."

"This seems reasonable. We should kill people over this."

NFTs, two seconds: "You can just copy and paste stuff, and that's good."

"This seems terrible. We should kill people over this."

Show thread

Mmmm. My brain is swirling. Plagiarism is a strict liability norm with specific intent justifications and general intent punishments.

This is so dramatic. I love it.

"Plagiarism is just Not On."

Watching a 1990s Australian documentary about plagiarism. Accusing plagiarists of being sheep, but praising students for bleating out the opinion that plagiarism is "cheating," lol.

"Just lie of your resume" / "Just lie on your dating profile"
""I am sure it will be a great start to relationship if you start with lies."
"In my experience, people only want relationships with others who can lie to them."

I've been playing a bit of "Disco Elysium" and there's a conversation where the player character realizes that he was probably assigned to the case as a joke because he is a fuck-up, so he gets depressed and the by-the-book detective partner character assures him that he's not completely terrible at his job for once.

It's such a Mood.

it seems backwards to me to be greatful to a politician for offering a social service or a "right". all they did was permit it to happen and not be immediately killed by threat of massive counterinsurgent violence in one of the numerous domestic forever-wars designed to prop them up and keep their opponents on the back foot

How could you possibly be arguing for Congress (and the presidency) to have more power over the direction of this country just 3 months before Congress is almost certainly going to go to the Republicans and just 1 month after abortion was banned in half of the country with their vigorous support?
