Tomorrow dozens of national organizations are teaming up to host protests in cities across the United States. With hundreds of thousands of people hitting the streets for the first time since the effective collapse of the constitutional republic, there’s a growing need to widely disseminate information on keeping ourselves and others safe. To that end, we’re sharing a new zine based on text from @privacyguides, which includes best practices and helpful tips for smartphone security, protests, and mass surveillance. You can read and download the free guide at https://archive.org/details/protesters-guide-to-smartphone-security.
In Asheville, protesters will be rallying in Pack Square from 11am to 1pm. Members of our collective will be there distributing copies of “The Protesters’ Guide to Smartphone Security” along with practical zines for folks interested in taking effective action against fascism.

@firestorm I got an "item cannot be found" error.
@mamajax Hmm appears to be live for us? Please try again and let us know!
Just to add another data point, both links in the original post worked fine for me.
@mamajax you might have better luck with this link https://archive.org/details/protesters-guide-to-smartphone-security/Protesters%20Guide%20to%20Smartphone%20Security%20-%20Screen%20Version/mode/1up
@firestorm @mamajax Ah yes - thank you!
@firestorm @mamajax The original didn't work for me either. Thanks for sharing this one!
@firestorm @privacyguides Best security…leave it at home, turn Bluetooth in your car off as well. Leave the tech behind.
@speedbird9 @firestorm @privacyguides
If your car is newer than about 15 years old (if it has a 911 button, or OnStar, receives updates over the air, etc) then it too has a 3G/4G transceiver in it and can be tracked by law enforcement just like a phone.
My car was made in 2016 and has 3G, which was deprecated a few years ago but can still be tracked by Triggerfish/Stingray devices.
tl;dr: LEAVE YOUR CAR AT HOME
@firestorm That’s a treatise! @privacyguides
Don't know if this needs to be shouted, but if you attend, LEAVE YOUR SMARTPHONE AT HOME. Take a cheapie burner phone you paid cash for if you really need one.
@firestorm @privacyguides @evacide Don't forget that the EFF also has some great guidance on how to protest safely.
Protesting? Protect yourself.
@firestorm @privacyguides
Oh these are nice - thank you!
@firestorm
Wear a mask! For many reasons, including for health.
@firestorm Interesting reading thanks for sharing
@firestorm @privacyguides wow, the privilege to think that this zine is ridiculously: https://www.sproutdistro.com/catalog/zines/direct-action/responding-gunshot-wounds/
I like living in Germany. Let's work on keeping it that way (we have our own fascists here)
this is the link for a phone readable version (the one at the main link is the printable booklet format)
