This is a beautiful text about Star Trek Deep Space Nine (my all time favorite concerning Star Trek) and why it is so much more than a science fiction show:

Also thinking about moving instances. Very US heavy this one...

Currently in the UK and want to buy Remote Control by Nnedi Okorafor, but so far only devil bookstores are selling it online and I am sick of e-readers. A lesson in patience I guess.

Finally done with all the shit I had to finish before holidays. Caught up on the Expanse to celebrate the start of my down time. Anyone watching it?

Now, this book sounds exciting:
"Analysing the ways in which whiteness continues to pervade feminist literature, as well as feminist debates in the liberal media, Jonsson demonstrates that, despite an increased attention to race, intersectionality and difference, stories told by white feminists are shaped by their desire to maintain an 'innocent' position towards racism."

“But the 8-hour workday is too profitable for big business, not because of the amount of work people get done in eight hours (the average office worker gets less than three hours of actual work done in 8 hours) but because it makes for such a purchase-happy public. Keeping free time scarce means people pay a lot more for convenience, gratification, and any other relief they can buy. It keeps them watching television, and its commercials. It keeps them unambitious outside of work. We’ve been led into a culture that has been engineered to leave us tired, hungry for indulgence, willing to pay a lot for convenience and entertainment, and most importantly, vaguely dissatisfied with our lives so that we continue wanting things we don’t have. We buy so much because it always seems like something is still missing.”

Work, anxiety, productivity

I have a deadline for a conference paper by tomorrow. But all I want to do is to sleep and eat. All this year has been is work and constant anxiety. I slept like 5 hours during the day yesterday because I am just exhausted and fed up by everyone in academia pretending that we can be "productive" and carry on as usual. Ffs...this neoliberal bs ethos has to go!

Uhhh, fascist Alex Jones is on mastodon.

Guessing fediverse admins may want to block that instance (it calls itself "The pro-liberty social network" which is fash speak)

Just a heads up to anyone who isn't a fascist lol

The idea that we are separate from nature is a colonial idea that we need to abandon. It is both an anti-indigenous concept and unproductive towards limiting the effects of climate change and healing our planet.

It's so wild, that we accept constant corporate surveillance of our lives which depletes us of any meaningful interaction and love, when alternatives are possible. The extant of the willful destruction of people's imagination is so disheartening.

I am on here for about a day and it feels SO good to know that NONE of the clicks or boosts I do, will be used to profile me and try to sell me shit. 😭❤

Indigenous people from modern day Canada and Alaska invented the first sunglasses. The oldest pair known dates back to the year 1200. They work by limiting the amount of sunlight that hits your eyes, preventing snow blindness.

Hey,
I moved to Mastodon to practice what I preach. Used to work in privacy campaigning and am now lost in academia.

I feel quite disconnected from people atm (thx Covid) and would love to meet some new folks. I really care about the environment, anti-capitalism, decolonisation and supporting LGBTQ rights. Mainly hoping to talk organising and politics (anarchist+queer-feminist), but also up for fun stuff art, films, astro
etc.
