while i don’t think cars are inherently fascistic tools, i do think having entire societies and ways of life built around private auto ownership and use creates a population more susceptible to fascist thinking. like, a new york taxi driver or youth driving side shows are vastly different from the (suburban) commuter or soccer mom, though these make up the good majority of car drivers (in the u.s. at least).

the symbolism is also interesting, as the meaning of symbols changes over time. ford was also a nazi sympathizer, and every major car manufacturer also produces military vehicles. the contemporary american idea of the car (at least according to advertisers and defenders of car culture) is that it’s a symbol of freedom, liberty, safety (lol!), and escape.

Driving cars reduces social cohesion and the replacement of common space with car space also reduces social trust. These factors and the isolation that cars bring must be recognized as elements in the resurgence of fascism today.
But it occurred to me that the initial rise of fascism came at the same time as the rise of the automobile, and cars were an important symbol of fascist power. Now I wonder how much those were actually entwined.
