I don’t understand why people are perpetually surprised by Donald Trump’s actions. His behavior follows a very simple pattern: if he is promising to hurt someone or break something, he is telling the truth. Otherwise, he is lying. That’s it! There is no magic involved.
“I did not commit that crime” = a lie
“I will be generous with my own money and use my presidential powers for helping someone” = a lie
“I will steal this thing and use my presidential powers to ruin lives and destroy the global economy” = the truth
These are really rudimentary patterns he displays on a daily basis! You don’t even need superpowers like autism to pick up on this simple fact about him!
@HeavenlyPossum His election platform was always a promise to that end. He pledged to hate all the right people - the non-white, the academic bearers of unwelcome news, the immigrants, the nonconformists of all types - and to make them suffer until they were destroyed, thus purifying American culture. It works for so many dictators. Just give enough voters someone to hate, and promise that only you have the strength to fight the enemy within.
@HeavenlyPossum
I worry that it's because it's more comfortable to pretend like nothing could have been done. Acting surprised gives them an out to not have acted sooner.
@HeavenlyPossum A frustratingly old problem, as noted by Walter Benjamin: “The astonishment that the things we are experiencing in the 20th century are “still” possible is by no means philosophical.”
@HeavenlyPossum Trump is great, he's singlehandedly destroying capitalist America.
@HeavenlyPossum wait, does that mean my special trump edition magic 8 ball was..,. A SCAM?!?!
@HeavenlyPossum Yes. I understand it if people didn't expect him to do this or that, after all there's more than one way of being a deranged bully. But I don't understand it if they are surprised.
@HeavenlyPossum "Russian Asset is an Abuser"
Once you understand this, nothing Trump does is surprising. It's actually quite dull; "oh Russia avoided tariffs did it, oh what a surprise"
@HeavenlyPossum It is not as if Trump and MAGA project2025 were trying to hide what they had planned
@Robo105 @HeavenlyPossum I think Trump is very easily manipulated, particularly with appeals to his megalomania, and has almost no awareness of his own internal states. So he didn't so much lie about Project 2025, as refuse to believe someone was pulling his strings. The same with his relationship with Putin. Or for that matter, his relationship with the Clintons, who talked him into running in 2016.
@foolishowl @HeavenlyPossum Didn't know about the Clintons???
@HeavenlyPossum
Reminds me of this:
"My faceless neighbor spoke up: 'Don't be deluded. Hitler has made it clear he will annihilate all Jews before the clock strikes twelve.'
I exploded: 'What do you care what he said? Would you want us to consider him a prophet?'
His cold eyes stared at me. At last, he said wearily: 'I have more faith in Hitler than in anyone else. He alone has kept his promises, all his promises, to the Jewish people.' "
~Elie Wiesel, recounting a conversation, Night.
@FishNamedDog @HeavenlyPossum
That book is fucking harrowing.
@jargoggles @HeavenlyPossum And the original seems like it would be more interesting/depressing, if I could find a copy of it (in English, or I suppose learn Yiddish): https://www.tabletmag.com/sections/history/articles/jewish-rage-elie-wiesel, and for that matter yet another version: https://www.tabletmag.com/sections/arts-letters/articles/elie-wiesels-secret. It's a shame -- the editor, and Christian audience, sort of forced him to be quiet about the rage in a way Yiddish (his native tongue) and Hebrew, both spoken mostly by Jews, didn't.
@HeavenlyPossum
Think spoiled and petulant 10 year old.
@stargazersmith @HeavenlyPossum
Heck, in his case I think five-year-old — someone who never developed an understanding of logic nor a sense of right and wrong beyond "what I can get away with".
It's his current hatchet man I think of as a misbehaving 10-year-old... someone who understands the basic concepts, but just sees them as weaknesses to exploit.
@HeavenlyPossum He's a vengeful manbaby given the keys to the worlds largest and most globally intertwined economy - he's punishing those who either 'hurt' or didn't support him while he ran for president (both the first time - Ukraine/Zelensky is a great example of this), bulldozing US and the world economy as collateral damage.
I really hope GOP loses midterms, so this insanity doesn't continue.
History is clear. Never has a fascist regime been overthrown by voting.
@LevZadov @HeavenlyPossum One can hope this time will be the first. Though you're right - Nothing will likely happen.
@HeavenlyPossum Right, how are people surprised by his actions?
@HeavenlyPossum people are easily misled by what they want to be true.
@HeavenlyPossum
Also any statement of his that contains a number (that is supposed to represent something in reality) is a lie.
@HeavenlyPossum I'm less "surprised" and more "horrified" and other things I can't say in a public arena.
@HeavenlyPossum people still seem to think he is full of BS and won't actually do anything or will be stopped. There were people in his first term that told him to piss off, but now he's surrounded by yes men and a spineless Republican party in Congress.
The guy is pretty going to do what he wants
