I'm not making any assumptions about Kolektiva's sitch (cause I don't know the setup) but the performance issues we are experiencing are a good reminder that fediverse instances of significant size need to have a plan for scaling.

Bottlenecks can be unclear. Monitoring is critical. Distributing load and resources and load balancing traffic and accommodating for VPS limitations and high load are all essential considerations. And it takes a ton of work.

Folks are doing this on barebones budgets and it involves some niche expertise, but it's all super important for maintaining communication networks that people rely on.
